AucklandWaikato Fisheries Manager Dr Adam Daniel says this summer should provide “the largest number of catchablesize rainbows the lake has ever seenreaping the rewards of our Arapuni fish stocking programme.”The rainbow trout in Lake Arapuni grow faster than anywhere else in the North Island, even faster than the Rotorua Lakes, he says.
So far this year the average length of rainbows reported in our tag return programme has been over 52 cm, a very healthy size.” A half metreplus Arapuni brown trout. Dr Daniel says the lake fishes well yearround but January through April are the most productive months. Most anglers fish the lake by boat but using bait and weighted flies from the Arapuni Dam Bridge or the base of the Waipapa Dam are also popular methods.
Lake Arapuni is an easy spot to
sell rs gold troll for trout with several good boat ramps including Bulmers Landing, Jones Landing and Landing Road,Dr Daniel says.“If you’re new to fishing at Lake Arapuni, the annual Lake Arapuni Fishing Contest put on by the Te Awamutu Fish Game Club is a great way learn how to fish the lake without spending a lot of time experimenting on your own.
The heavy rains also meant there was water everywhere! So much so that many coastal residence had to
Runescape 2007 Gold abandon their homes. The ducks didn’t mind this one bit as they spread themselves around the flooded pastures, feeding up large on invertebrates and worms. This meant healthy fat ducks for the season ahead, but also meant a lot of birds that were congregating in good numbers on fed ponds were now spread far and wide.
The result was a worse than expected opening day for many hunters. Some fat ducks enjoying some new water. For a good number of hunters though, opening weekend couldn’t have been better. We received a number of reports from a range of different areas across the region of hunters enjoying one of their ‘best shoots in yearsx99 with ‘mobs of duck like we had 20 years ago.
X99 This was great to
Deadman Mode Gold hear, and shows how hunting can be so hit and miss. Its always fun setting your decoys to try and lure in circling mallards With birds spread out for opening, meant that not as many ducks would have been harvested than anticipated over the first two days of the season, this meant only more ducks around for the avid hunter who hunts throughout the season.
A WCO recognises a river or lakesx99 outstanding natural, recreational, cultural or
Cheap Deadman Gold heritage valuespresently there are 15 WCOprotected waterways throughout New Zealand for a full list click here.“When a WCO is granted it provides National Parktype status, protecting its outstanding natural values for all freshwater fish, wildlife, outdoor recreation and present and future generations,Oliver says.
So, when a WCO is put in place it protects a river from damming, altering its course, or other environmentally damaging instream impacts, he adds.Fish Game NZ, through their efforts to preserve and enhance habitat for species like trout, salmon and a variety of waterfowl, have led the majority of applications for WCOs.
But because a WCO also protects a host of other recreational and indigenous wildlife values, many other parties have assisted their effortsincluding Whitewater NZ, Forest Bird and the Environmental Defence Society. Oliver says he is happy to front the campaign on behalf of these organisations.“We need to get behind Fish Game and the NGOs who’ve gone into bat on behalf of the public so often on this issue.
Pictured right: Eastern Fish Game staff and police caught poachers with 29 trout yesterday, including 15 mature spawning females. Photo: Fish Game.More than half of
DM Gold the freshlykilled trout were mature spawning females, with wild fish making up the majority of the haul. It is one of the worst cases of poaching recorded in the area for the best part of a decade.
This has the potential to deliver a huge blow to breeding stocks and the future fish population in the area,Eastern Fish Game officer Anthony van Dorp said. "I went for a walk along the stream this morning and couldn’t see a single troutthey’d absolutely pillaged it. The message needs to get through to people that poaching ruins it for everyone and while it’s devastating to lose this many fish, it’s satisfying these individuals will be facing severe penalties.
Penalties for poaching fish during winter spawning season range from a maximum of two yearsx99 jail or fines of up to 100,000.Mr van Dorp believes the 29 trout recovered are only a portion of the true numbers taken recently, with his team and police working to identify several other suspects caught in covert video footage.
First up, the Minister of the Environment should prohibit the shameful practice of
Cheap Deadman Gold allowing some waterways to decline in quality if that decline is balanced by improvements elsewhere. “This unders and overs practice is probably illegal and a slap in the face for the environment. It makes no sense for our “clean and green, 100 percent pureinternational brand,Mr Johnson said.
Mr Johnson said recent research of public opinion shows New Zealanders want clean water and don’t want their right to have clean, swimmable and fishable rivers taken away.“Dr Wright has made six recommendations to the Minister of the Environment in her review of the National Policy Statement on Water.
The duty now falls to the minister to say what he is going to do as a consequence,Mr Johnson said.“Having clean water is fundamental to the Kiwi brandbeing “dirty and brown and only 63% puresimply doesn’t cut it. “The environment and the economy depend on clean water and the government needs to act to ensure New Zealanders can continue to drink, swim in and gather food from their rivers and streams, he said.
What better way to start your season than getting up early, packing a lunch and hitting the water with your kids, says Fish Game’s South Island Communications advisor Andrew Currie.Mr Currie adds that Fish Game has seen a steady increase in the sale of Family Licences over the last few seasons and sales were already up ahead of this season.
For 161 a family, including up to two adults parents or grandparents and 4 children or grandchildren under the age of 18 on 1 October can be licenced for the whole year. You have to admit that’s pretty good value,he says.“I spent opening day in Central Otago and witnessed a few tangled lines and lost lures, but we also saw plenty of our junior stakeholders happily carrying fish back to the car too.
According to Mr Currie, as the season progresses a number of Fish Game regions will be holding ‘junior onlyx99 or family fish out events across the country, and anyone interested should either check the website or call their local Fish Game office. These participationfocused days offer a great opportunity to either pick up some skills, or simply enjoy a day out in a supportive, fun environment, he says.
