Square Enix's HD-2D-themed games have received a lot of positive appreciation from gamers. Titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of those who love retro in part due to their unique style of artwork.

In a new interview with 4Gamer (translated via Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano talked about the design style and how it's going to be implemented in the future games of the company. When the interviewer expressed surprise that more indie games haven't adopted the same style, Asano revealed the reason that it's quite expensive!

"It's important to note that it's priced higher than you'd think. In that respect, it's perfect to the titles coming out of Square Enix. There might not be much to gain by other companies copying the style," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately the cost of this won't deter Square Enix from releasing more games in this fashion.

Remakes of Live a Live is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake for Dragon Quest III is currently in development. There are many other games that could benefit from the look, and it'll be interesting to see what Square Enix does with HD-2D next. While the company has clearly committed to this style of graphic cheap D2R ladder items, Asano went on to reveal that there is no present "definitive text," and it will continue to evolve with each game.
