Miami’s offense hasn’t been as impressive on the road as it has been at home in recent years. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill has not been great against the Jets throughout his career.
Late Sunday, the Dolphins were a one-point favorite in this game. But after the Jets smoked Detroit on Monday Night Football, the line shifted to make Miami a three-point underdog.
The Jets entered last season as a laughingstock, attempting to “Suck For Sam,” as in Darnold. Somehow the Jets were able to land Darnold, despite winning a surprising five games.
ESPN reported that “Fireman Ed” is coming out of retirement to lead the J-E-T-S chant today. Will it matter? We think the Dolphins have a few greater concerns:
Miami’s offensive line performed well in the season-opening defeat of Tennessee. And it performed well in the preseason, as Tannehill was virtually untouched. Now, the problem. Late this week it was determined starting left guard Josh Sitton will miss the season with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. Sitton is a four-time Pro Bowler. Sitton’s grades via Pro Football Focus the last five years: 91, 87, 85, 82, 77. Here are the PFF grades for replacement Ted Larsen: 59, 62, 57, 73, 51. Now, Larsen is a very solid backup interior offensive lineman in the NFL. But regular matchups against powerful defensive linemen like Leonard Williams of the Jets will be a challenge.

Linebackers
First-year linebackers Raekwon McMillan and Jerome Baker are learning on the fly. The Jets have some running backs — Bilal Powell, Isaiah Crowell and Trenton Cannon — who can be receiving threats out of the backfield. Perhaps one of the former Ohio State linebackers or Kiko Alonso, who had an interception in the first game, can pull off a few tricks to confuse rookie Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. It will be interesting to see how often Miami uses all three linebackers in base, because in the season opener, the Jets used a lot of multiple tight end formations. This would be a way for the Jets to limit how much Dolphins nickel corner Minkah Fitzpatrick is on the field.

Quarterback
This is an excellent opportunity for Ryan Tannehill to show Tannehill 2.0 really is an upgraded model. Tannehill is 4-5 in his career against the Jets, with 10 touchdowns, 9 interceptions and a rating of 72.0. The Jets have a decent secondary, led by star safety Jamal Adams and corners Trumaine Johnson and Mo Claiborne. With so much attention on the rookie Darnold entering this game, with Tannehill outplay him? He should. Jets safety Marcus Maye (foot) is out, and that should help. Perhaps Kenyan Drake will have a big day receiving. Perhaps DeVante Parker (finger) can contribute more than expected, in his season debut.

Darnold overcame a pick-6 on the first pass of his career and led the Jets (1-0) to a surprising 48-17 win over the Detroit Lions. Darnold didn’t get rattled, showing a calmness that led to him to complete 16-of-21 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the game. The Jets scored 31 points in the third quarter, the highest-scoring third quarter in team history.
Darnold got help from running backs Isaiah Crowell (102 yards) and Bilal Powell (60 yards) and a solid performance from wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, who caught six passes for 63 yards and a touchdown against the Lions.
